Binance Files Defamation Suit Against Wall Street Journal Over Alleged False Claims
Binance Holdings Ltd. has initiated legal proceedings against Dow Jones & Company, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit alleges defamation through 11 specific false statements in a February 23, 2026 article titled 'Binance Fired Staff Who Flagged $1 Billion Moving to Sanctioned Iran Entities.'
The cryptocurrency exchange contends the article misrepresented internal compliance procedures, asserting that terminated employees violated data protection policies rather than being dismissed for flagging suspicious transactions. Binance maintains it proactively reported suspicious activity to authorities and never terminated investigations into potential sanctions violations.
This legal action follows congressional scrutiny of Binance's operations, with lawmakers reportedly citing the WSJ piece as justification for formal inquiries. The suit seeks both compensatory and punitive damages alongside reputational remediation.
